Special needs estate planning is a phrase that has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, but what it means is not completely clear. A longer, more accurate, way to describe what we’re talking about is “creating an estate plan for yourself that makes sure your child with special needs is taken care of when you die or become disabled.”
Sometimes, people use the phrase special needs planning when what they really mean is special needs estate planning and vice versa. Just to be clear, special needs planning is an umbrella term that includes special needs estate planning, but it also includes other types of planning like plans for housing, employment, finances, and government benefits.
So then, this course focuses on the estate planning part of special needs planning from the perspective of parents of children with special needs.
